Algebra: Which is Larger? (I)



Which is larger in magnitude?
5 + n or  5n

Explain your answer clearly with examples.

  4. 5 + n = one group of n = n + 5
    - If n was a positive number, the answer would be one group of n + five and the magnitude would be shorter.
    - If n was a negative number, the answer would be 5 - n and the magnitude would also be shorter.

    5n = five groups of n = n X 5
    - If n was a positive number, the answer would be positive and the magnitude would be longer.
    - If n was a negative number, the answer would still be negative and the magnitude would also be shorter.

    Therefore, 5n is larger in magnitude.
